You will realise that starting anything new that is not purely entertainment means that success will depend on building numbers slowly and getting to know those who come.
Thus we are not looking at present for more than a dozen youngsters and across the 8 – 13 year old range – plus suitable older youngsters willing to help alongside the leaders of the day. Good experience for CV’s and for satisfying the volunteering requirements of Prince’s Trust assignments.
The latter is a special example of what we need, which is community involvement from family, friends and other individuals from our local community (at least primarily).
The Shed will be open for two weeks and then closed for half term so that in future volunteers can recharge! We are looking for ideas of what to do and we have some already.
We ask that youngsters coming bring with them an activity they enjoy which does NOT involve an electronic game (which tends to isolate youngsters from one another). When boredom or tiredness sets in then they can turn to this and share it with another too.
We have a table tennis table and a snooker/pool table and next Spring the external exercise equipment is there to use, courtesy of Eskmouth Whitby Scouts. Sharing what we have.
Sleights Youth Shed is for those in the outer ring to the west, in the rural areas including Ruswarp, Newholme, Grosmont, Snainton and similar. That may be varied if there are particularly good reasons for an exception. We want to help kids, build confidence as required, manage overconfidence (!), provide opportunities to explore and learn new things in small groups. It is what the adult Sheds do. They give a sense of belonging.
